  4.     I have swum with dolphins at the Hyatt Waikoloa in Hawaii, and
  5. I disagree with your opinion that they are best appreciated from
  6. afar (NATURE, Nov. 27). The permit for Dolphin Quest's swim program
  7. should be renewed. We must raise our environmental awareness, and
  8. Dolphin Quest does that, achieving a positive educational
  9. interaction between humans and dolphins and an unforgettable
  10. experience.

  15.     In the programs you mention, people swim with captive or
  16. semicaptive dolphins. But there is another kind of program:
  17. swimming with wild dolphins in the open ocean. The humans are not
  18. allowed to feed or touch the animals. By staying in or leaving an
  19. area, the wild dolphins decide if they want to swim and play with
  20. the humans. The joyful reality is that the dolphins show that they
  21. do want to be with people who treat them with respect.
